Non-wacko Books On Conspiracy Topics

The Puzzle Palace The Puzzle Palace by James Bamford
Hard to find, but this is the most thorough and well-researched work on the US National Security Agency (AKA No Such Agency). Reading it you will probably feel a bit like Fox Mulder even if there are no grand conspiracies or alien abductions. Since it is true, it is scarier than the X Files.

The Game of Nations by Miles Copeland
Currently out-of-print, this was written by a CIA agent in 1969. It provides a real window into how the CIA looked, and continues to look at their job. His rules for The Game of Nations:

1. Each player wants not so much to win as to avoid loss.
2. All players have no objective except to keep The Game going.
3. The alternative to The Game of Nations is war.

The author is not nearly as famous as his children. His son Stewart was the drummer for the rock group The Police, and his son Miles founded IRS Records.

My copy predates ISBN numbers and was published in hardback by Simon and Schuster. Amazon lists it as out-of-print but offers to hook you up with their used book auction.
